Volume settings problem

Hi, I'm a big user of KDE, and I definately prefer it over Gnome because of theme availability, configuration options, and that Koqueror does decent file browsing. However, after upgrading to Fedora Core 3 from Fedora Core 2, my volume settings are always set to zero! I can raise them to the proper levels afterwards, and sounds works after that, but it gets annoying to do that, rather than have the sound level not be at zero every time I turn the system on! I can't download any updates from Red Hat (can't get internet working on it), so is there some kind of fix I can do that does not involve downloading large files over 56K? Thanks.
