Chiniese in konsole

HI everybody, after hours searching on the net i have not found a solution to this problem, i am wondering how to display chinese text in a console window (in vi gedit etc). I need to be able to read chinese text files on the system, there is no need for the ability to write back to the files in chinese. The system was set up with RH8 which, needless to say had a completely different system.

System - Suse 9.2, KDE 3.3.0

I hope someone can help with this problem, any help is greatly appreciated.
