Enabling Translucency and Shadows in kwin

Hi,

I am using kde 3.4 beta 2, installed from the SuSE 9.1 rpms.

When I go to the translucency section in Control Center under window behaviour it gives a short description on how to enable Xcompmgr etc. for use within KDE.

I followed the instructions as written, plus some other tips I found on the web. I have used the kde patched xcompmgr available from http://baghira.sourceforge.net, plus installed transset.

By running xcompmgr -cfC I can have some nice looking shadows and fading effects, as well as transparent windows using the transset utility. All of this is very smooth and fast.

But the control center still doesn't realise that everything is set up correctly, and continues to display the message saying I don't have xcompmgr support installed.

Any ideas how to fix this, or how to diagnose the problem?

Cheers,

Luke.

RE: Enabling Translucency and Shadows in kwin

Do you still have this problem after installing a stable version of KDE 3.4 or 3.5?

You have an ATI X300 graphics card right? Is the whole transparency thing working fine on your desktop? Which ATI drivers are you using, the closed or open drivers?

Since I'm not able to make it work on my Thinkpad T42 (has an ATI card as well) :)
