Audio ripping w/kde?

I would like to rip audio cds and encode them as mp3s using kde, so i've installed the kde audio ripping functionality (kio?). however, I am unable to access my "audio cd" as a user...it only works when I am root (same deal with k3b if i want to burn a cd). How do i fix this?

Also, is the mp3 encoder LAME? if so, how can i tell which version it is?

Thank!

Have you checked it you have the neccesairy rights to access the cdrom? If you have not the neccessairy rights, you can't play the CD either. The k3b problem can be caused by a new version of the Linux-kernel. If the version of the Linux-kernel is greater then 2.6.7, there are problems with burning (see the k3b-website for more details).

You can tell the place where lame is situated at configure-time. Then, you can give the following option to ./configure: --with-lame=/usr, where /usr is the install-directory of lame. Note that the binairy application is in /path/bin, in this case in /usr/bin.

If you want to know which version of lame you have, enter[code:1]lame --version[/code:1] in a console.

i can play the audio cd fine and access the cdrom as a user no problems. however, when i am root, there is an additional device "audio cd" that is created, and that is what i want to be able to access as a user, so i can just copy the audio files and have them encode.

as for lame, it doesn't look like lame is installed after all.

Thanks!

Have you tried the url audiocd:/ in Konqueror (as user)? That is the place where you access the audiocd kioslave.

If you haven't lame installed, you cannot rip the cd to mp3 (AFAIK). But it should be possible to rip it to ogg/vorbis or other formats.

Ah, I wasn't looking in the right place...I expected the "audiocd" to be under Devices, but it was under Services in Konquerer. So that works now, and cd burning works now too for some reason (maybe because I installed the kernel-supermount patch??)

Anyways, thanks guys!
