Help with Start Menu Please?

:) Hi All - I am a total newbie on this forum, and want to thatnk all the participants for thier posts. I am coming right in with a plea for help.

I am an old Unix guy who naturally migrated to Linux - but didn't know anything re desktops etc. After running KDE for a year or so, I realized i was constantly having to skim over a *lot* of apps in the KDE start menu everytime i wanted to run something, so i thought to myself... I bet these clever folks have made this really easy. I started deleting things from the menu, and while i was at it re-arranging those i didn't delete to more acommodate <sp?> my workflow.

Well - I bet you gurus are ROTFL right now! Anyway - I have been living with the results for about a year now - poking at it everyonce in a while try to get back to where i was. The most suprising thing was how the Control Center sort of became a truncated version of its former self.

So... Any help? I have already upgraded from RH 8.1 to RH 9.0 thinking the upgrade might restore the original menu - no luck.

PS - I have a wonderful and long evolving setup for everything else - so if i can keep that stuff (desktops etc )...so much the better.

If you're looking to restore the KDE kicker to it's default, you need to delete ~/.config/menus/applications-kmenuedit.menu and restart the panel OR restart KDE.
-- rm -fr /etc/whitehouse
-- Gentoo | udev | Xorg 6.8.2 | 2.6.14-r4 | KDE 3.5.0

You can runn ./kappfinder from the console (if that's one you've already deleted from the menu) which can scan for apps not on the menu. It should find all the apps you deleted from the menu.

As for loosing your desktop configuration you can make backup of you ~/.kde directory and all you settings will be preserved.

You can read more ideas in the thread http://www.kde-forum.org/viewtopic.php?t=3670
