Feature Request - Manual Sizing of the Grid used by Icons

I use an 18" flat panel, at a resolution of 1280 * 1024, and the icons are spaced closer than I would like (it would be easier to read if they could be spread out more).

I like the align to grid option, and use it, but I would very much appreciate being able to manually adjust the spacing between the icons, even if this means that I will have to manually edit the .directory file.

Why is this feature hardcoded anyway? Surely, it wouldn't make the UI significantly slower to initialise?

I would greatly appreciate a response, good or bad. If this isnt going to be implemented, could someone please tell me what i need to change in the source code in order that i can increase this spacing.

Many thanks.
