Haven't had this error message before, but it sounds like /etc/apt/sources.list couldn't be read.

Check that the file is there an has read permissions for root.

The Debian package pool was offline due to the server crack on friday.

It should be online right now, but maybe some mirrors are waiting for synchronisation before opening up as well.
