These are very popular, and providing it is pretty good, you'll get people converting in droves, or at least duel booting until they discover the rest of KDE and linux etc.
There are several quake source modifications that can be used, linuxgames.com has plenty, as well as other engines, but I think we should stick to quake-based stuff.

If the gameplay and weaponry is good, and the graphics are good, then we could be sitting on a major killer app. Linux usage, and consequently, KDE usage and development would increase by quite a lot, which would in turn accelerate the progress of graphics and gaming capability on Linux.
Any thoughts?
Yep, but it's a long way away from now! But we'll get there.Quoted

Hey tuxnet, weren't you planning a Linux game? I think a FPS would be cool.

Yeah, perhaps the kde libraries wouldn't be the best. However, it could be a side project with kde, ship the game with kde, it'll go on most/all major distros, and then you have a major incentive for people to convert.

I know there are proprietary solutions but thats not the object of the exercise. The more open source killer apps, the better.

A KDE project uses KDE libs and adheres to KDE guidelines.
If a separate project is good, distributions will ship it anyway.
It sounded like you where suggesting to have a good FPS and there are several.
I guess if some people where to develop an open source game, they are not very likey limiting themselves to one platform, if their base engine is portable enough.
Cheers,
