GTK appearance in KDE

I'm an anal neatfreak and I can't get my GTK apps to look decent at all in KDE. My most frequently used app is Firebird but I also use VMware Workstation from time to time. Is there a away to pretty up GTK apps through KDE or is that a plus for Gnome users?

GTK apps and KDE

I was running in circles with this for a ilttle while. I searched the web and the best thing I could find was to install the GNOME Control Center and launch that under KDE. From there I was able to work with the font settings and such for GTK apps.

I am not a programmer and am a newbie, but what I was able to gather from quickly scanning some of these articles is that there are 2 diffrent GTK libraries. Some apps are written with GTK1.x (older GNOME apps) and some are written with GTK2. There appears to be 2 diffrent control centers. 1 for GNOME2 (GTK2 apps) and one for the older version of GNOME(GTK1.x) you may need to install both but I am not sure. I installed both but only used GNOME2 to adjust the fonts of the app in question.

Denpending on your distro the respective paths may be as follows:

"/opt/gnome/bin/gnomecc" (GTK1.x)
"/opt/gnome2/bin/gnome-control-center" (GTK2)

Hopes this helps

Big help actually ~ I've been toying with that for some time, I'm glad to know I'm on the right track. It looks like you're using Suse as well? My problem with that is that applying themes via the Gnome control centers doesn't do anything. Not even the preview pane in gnomecc changes. However, when I'm physically in Gnome, it works fine. Did you have any trouble with this?

KDE themes with GTK

As far as the GTK apps I have running are concerned, they appear to be carrying over the theme but I could not tell you for sure. I am using the Plastik theme from KDE-Look.org.

I did find another site that gives a little bit more direction where this is concerened and from what I was reading it may require that a similar theme for GNOME be installed as well. I can tell as I am writting this that I am in a bit over my head here.

Here is the link to the site that has a bit more information. I wish I could be of more help.

Awesome ~ Got it working. Updating to the GTK2 version of Firebird helped too.

Thanks!

GTK-Qt theme

If you're looking for more consistency between KDE (Qt) and Gnome (GTK) themes, you might want to look at the GTK-Qt Theme engine. Rather than trying to find a GTK theme to match your KDE one, you can use this theme engine which uses whatever KDE theme you're using to draw GTK widgets as well. It only works for GTK2--and not GTK1--apps, though.

Additionally, for easy switching of GTK themes without going through the Gnome control centers, check out the gtk-theme-switch program.

Hope this helps.
