Kindof an Addon...Updating KDE

So I've been running KDE 3.0.1 for some time and enjoying it. Looking at the newest build and all the features, etc. I really want to get the newest version. How does one go about doing this? Is it possible to merely update the program or must one wipe KDE and reinstall with a newer version from there? I've kinda settled into a niche of perfected settings, etc. ever since I began using KDE. I'm using Slackware 8.1 if that helps. Thanks.
