KDE 3.1 .. Need help ... Pleaseeeeee

Hey All,

I have just installed RedHat 7.1 ... Including the standard KDE version that ships with the CD ... I got bored with the look and decided to upgrade to KDE3.1 ... Now i have some problems.

I downloaded the RPM's and used the "Package Manager" in RedHat ... I kept giving me dependency messages ... So i unclicked the "Check Dependencys" option ... The only options that were checked were ... "Replace Files" ... "Replace Packages" and something else.

Once i did that to every RPM that i downloaded ... I restarted my box ... and now when i load "startx" it brings up a dialog box saying it cannot start "kdeinit".

I am new to this whole scene so i dont know what to do .... Some input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It sounds like the new RPM's are installed in a different directory than the previous one.
Do a "locate kdestart" and an "echo $KDEDIR" and see if they point to the same base folder.
This assumes that the locatedb has been updated since you installed the new kde. you can force this by running "updatedb".

Just out of curiosity, for what distro did you download the packages? Are there any KDE 3.1 packages for Red Hat 7.1 availible??

I realize this may not be a solution for you but I strongly suggest you upgrade to Red Hat 8 or Red Hat 9..
