Window managers in KDE

Hi ! I was wondering do everybody here use kwin ( I think it's what it's called ) the default window manager for KDE or do some poeple change it ? I know it's feasible to change it to another one so you can have different things or different looks but is it worth it ?

Anybody on the forums who is using another window manager ? If so what is it ?

Yup, I use kwin. I'm very happy with it and see no need to change. But, isn't it great that you can change it if you want to? :wink:
The only substitute for bad manners is fast reflexes.

I thought it was called KWM, for K(DE?) Window Manager? Either way, that's what I use.

it used to be called KWM in the KDE1 days. KWin is the updated WM that has been shipping with KDE since version 2. right now in CVS there is a branch dedicated to taking KWin even further so 3.2 could likely see some nice improvements in KWin...

KWin

I like KWin, although I'm thinking of trying some Sawfish themes in the future. I like the Bluecurve port on art.gnome.org, although I am not an advocate of Bluecurve in general. I'm a Mandrake user.

Why use a window manager other than kwin?

I use KWM (KWIN?) for my regular desktop, but often use VNC to work from other computers. Under VNC I use ICE because of its smaller footprint and compatabilllity with VNC.

If and when RedHat deems us worthy and releases KDE 3.1 I will switch to using it with VNC. So, that is 'why' one might use a different window mangler with KDE.

Hi!
I use Openbox http://www.icculus.org/openbox/ and I would never change back to kwin. It's the only windowmanager which is completely supported in KDE 3.1, so you have 3 opportunities to use it:
1) as a complete replacement of kwin via editing startkde.
2) stand alone and starting kdesktop (this gives you the KDE Desktop with Icons and Drag&Drop
3) stand alone and only starting kicker. This is what I prefer, because I like the original root window with all its possibilities rather than the 'overpainted' KDE background. With this setting I can use the mouse wheel to change desktops, a feature I really miss with kwin.
Other advantages are the keygrabber which gives you much more flexibility for hotkeys than the similiar KDE feature, a complete integration of KDE 3.x and GNOME 2 panel applets and WindowMaker DockApps at the same time, the possibility to hide the window decorations for some applications, the smaller footprint, the good xinerama support and ... much more. :D
You should give it a try.
