Kopete in Gnome

I was wanting to try kopete in Gnome.
So, I did.
Problem was that the icons did not show up in the notification area but in their own little windows in the upper-left hand corner. How can I get kopete to show up in the notification area?

I am running Gnome 2.6.1 and KDE 3.2.3 under Gentoo Linux.
