VNC performance

I use VNC on a Slackware system with kde 3.2, and use the kde VNC client to connect to it from other computers.
However, the vnc connection seems to be very slow. For example, I have a very bad mouse moving, and the clicks are "seen" by the server only after about half a second (that in this case is a long, long time). I'm quite sure that the problem is in the server side, since connecting with a Microsoft Windows client is the same, while connecting to a MS Windows VNC server, also with the kde client, doesn't have this problem.
Thank you for help!!

What are the specs of the server? Does the server have the necessary resources to handle a graphical VNC?

It's a Pentium 3 600 mhz with about 400 mb of Ram, and an ati rage video card (I use the gatos drivers for X, but also with the standard "ati" driver is the same).
The system is a Slackware 9.1, kernel 2.4.22 and kde 3.2; xfree and qt should be up to date.
The heaviest program running is "amule", which takes about the 24% of the memory (right now I have about 17 mb of free physical ram) and the 10% of the cpu. No other big processes are running.
Usually, when connecting with VNC, the vnc server process takes the 30% of ram (and so I have less than 10 mb of free ram) and the 7% of cpu.

From what you've said, the server should be powerful enough to handle an active graphical VNC connection. What kind of connection is between the two computers?

There's a wi-fi connection, 802.11b 11 Mbit (with VPN overhead).
The real speed seems to be about 500 kb/s.
However, I also use this connection to the Ms Windows VNC server, which, as I said, have no problems.

I would recommend reinstalling vnc server. It sounds as though there may be a non-vital library missing, or maybe a corrupted library. The hardware and connection are plenty, and vcn seems to think it has everything it needs, so I would try to start fresh.
