Is there anyway to get a search toolbar (similar to the Opera search bar or the Google toolbar) in Konqueror? I know I can type gg:keywords, but having a built toolbar saves a lot of time, especially because it stays there even after I go to a URL?

Hmm, doesn't the URL input of Konqueor stay as well?

I find the internet short cuts of KDE way more flexible. You can do, for example, ALT-F2 gg:word
or define your own shortcuts.

Try typing in gg:process accounting. Click on the first link, read the article, click to the next page, etc. Now you want more information. Or perhaps you want to refine it to "Linux process accounting". Or perhpaps you'd like ot try a different search engine. In Opera, you can just click back on the search bar and make your changes. In Konq, it will be lost. You will have to retype it. (No major loss, but it gets inconvienent when you have a lot to do.)

I'm glad you do. But the software should conform to the user's preferences, not determine them.

Exactly. The user can decide which search engine to use by simply using a different shortcut.

Not sure where to lok for sidebar plugins though. kdeaddon perhaps.

MM? - User asks if there is a specific functionality, notes that she/he could use an existing alternative approach but explains that this is doesn't really meet requirements and has the functionality he has rejected explained to him. And we wonder why the business world seems to have a loe opinion of the development community.

On another point, I wnat to type in some words (doesn't matter what - say "george bush iq") into the location bar and if it is not a good URL automatically go to say google and conduct a search.

At present if I do this I get :
http://navigation.realnames.com/resolver.dll?action=navigation&realname=gg&charset=iso-8859-1&providerid=180&fallbackuri=http%3A//www.google.com/search%3Fq%3Dgg

-- can I configure Konqueror to simply do the search on say Google?

I saw not much difference in the suggested feature and the already available functionality.
If someone else thinks there is, he/she should file a feature request on bugs.kde.org

Hmm, it works that way here (I mean performing a google search on non-URLs) . What version of Konqueror are you using?
I have Konqueror from KDE 3.1.2 / Debian Woody

Just use the middle mousbutton to open the search results.
Konqueror will open them in a new tab, leaving the google-window untouched.

Yep, but that's not how software works, every software product determines your preferences, it does not complie in any way to your needs (unless you have written it yourself).
For example, using gg:query in Opera does not work, so the user has to conform with Opera's solution, just like the Konqueror user has to conform with Konqueror's solution.

Main difference between Konqueror and Opera is that Konqueror is open source, so you can do something about it
