How can I access the Internet with the Cable Connection?

Hi,

I've got the Cable to access the Internet, and the modem is connected to my network card. under Win, I've got a small program from the provider, but under Linux (I use Linux Mandrake 9.0 with KDE 3.0.3) I don't what to do, and where to go to configure all that :(.
Please help me, I've been looking for a wile now, and I just can't find what I need (what I think I need).
Can you help me??

It should connect automatically using DHCP if you use Mandrake 9.0.

I tried to use DHCP, but I'm a big newbie with Linux, and I tried a lot of stuff ... and it didn't work :( ...
Please, can you explain to me how to connect to the Internet like you said???
Is that the only way to connect to the Internet with the Cable under Linux Mandrake 9.0??

I don't use Mandrake, but I think its the about same with lindows.
During the installation, it should have asked you about connecting to the internet.

Yes ... it has.
But I've got 2 PCs, each one with Win98 and Linux on it.
And so, I have a small network, so when it asked me that, I choosed a static IP for my network, and a name for my PC. under Win98, I also have a static IP in the "Win98 network configuration", but my provider gave me a program to connect to the Internet, so I've got a static IP under my network (under Win98), and when I use this program, I can connect to the Internet, and have a dynamic IP. Is it possible to have the same kind of "configuration" under Linux?? Or do I have to choose between a Static IP(so only my network) and a Dynamic IP(so only the Internet)????
Also, I would like to know, is Lindows stable, very good, and is it true that you can use Win programs under it :roll:???
Please help me.

You can run SOME programs, but don't expect all of them to run. Lindows has said that thats not their intention several months ago.

You can install webmin or linuxconf! The second is easy to install and configure hardware, network, system, user and more!

I think it gives a Mandrake package!

----------Also, another question:
I've seen that on the CD my provider gave me, there is a package for Linux (the package is to install something named: PPPOE), so I installed it (it said my that the signature wasn't good, do you think it might cause problems??), then tried to do what they say to access the Internet.
But my connection is a Cable connection, and in those "help files", they always speak about ADSL :( ... do you think I must configure my connection the same way that for ADSL??
Something that might help you to help me: it seems like my connection is like the connection of sympatico.ca ... well, that what they seem to say in those "help files": the package installs something (program, or something ... I don't know :oops:) that is also for user from sympatico.ca.

The idea is this,

you need to either have a 'router' or a computer acting as one.

first get that computer to have internet access, (if you have a ppoe contection then you have to get it working)

then setup -what ever your going to use to share that to the other computers and you will need that computer to have 2 network cards. (most people use iptables)
