Font/graphical issues

I've installed a number of windows fonts using the Font Installer in the Control Center. The fonts were not available at first, but I restarted X and they appeared. However, the fonts are all screwed up. For example, I set my Window title font as BankGothic MD BT. When I hit apply, the font changed, but it sure isn't BankGothic. This happens with most of the fonts I've tried. They just do not look right (i.e. how they did in Windows...hell even Arial doesn't look right). How do I remedy this??

Also, some of the graphics in KDE don't look that great, like the toolbars in Firefox; I can see the gradient all over the place, so it doesn't have a smooth look.

I am using the latest KNOPPIX release, using KDE 3.2.3
