CD burning software in KDE
Currently thre are about a dozen cd burning/ripping software packages out there for KDE. Which one is your favorite? Or which one do you think should be the default for KDE?
Currently the best CD burn/ripper (IMHO) is k3b. I am really dissapointed to see that it is not part of the standard Kmultimedia package. Its about 10x easier to setup and use as konCD or K CD Bake Oven. It even has a nice little wizard to help you configure your CD burner the first time you use it. It also adds "burn this" options to your right click menu . (i.e. Right click on an iso image and choose burn... and 15 minutes later you have a brand new cdrom!) The most recent versions even have support for DVD ripping and Vcd burning!
Heck, I think its as easy or easier to setup/use as Nero or Easy CD Creator!

History shows that there will be no default CDR program within in KDE if several programs strive to enter the distribution and their authors are not willing to merge their efforts into one application.
I like k3b for the gui and simplicity.
But I use also cdbakeoven for 'el torito' and iso
A mix of the 2 in 1 app would be great.
I haven't used k3b yet, but I have been using CD Bakeoven, and found it easier to use than Nero or Easy CD Creator.
Which CD burner?
I have tried to install "k3b" but find it impossible to get hold of the file libmad.so.0. (I now use RedHat 9)

Weird. I run RH 9, and installed k3b just fine. Actually, when I search for libmad.so.0, i don't have it either. Maybe something else is wrong (?)

Strange, indeed. Installation of k3b is stopped stops because of a dependency between k3b and libmad.so.0. :?

The solution may be as simple as this:
I have been trying to install a version of k3b which was compiled for RH8. I have now downloaded a version compiler for RH9. k3b now both installs and starts.

Not quite sure yet, but...
I've been using KonCD and CDBakeOven, and don't really care for each. I haven't tried k3b yet, but it looks a lot more like what I'm used to on the Window$ side (i.e.: EZ CD Creator). The screen shots look terrific, and there appears to be a definite improvement between versions 0.7 and 0.8, judging by the posts. However, I have one question which I hope someone can answer: how the hell do you format a CD-RW in Linux??? All three of the above titles have options to blank out a disc, but you have to format the damned thing in order to write files to it. And I can't find it anywhere.
Suggestions?

You don't need to format a CD-RW after blanking it out. Just use it as it is
and it will work. (I am using K3b and it works).

K3B by a Mile
The program is absolutely amazing, professional and fits the kde standard. Its better than any commercial software I've tried. Making music mixes is such a dream with its playlist feature. It also has potential VCD support if you want that sort of thing. My problem is when we talk about it being the default for kde its kind of strange. A lot of people don't have burners, thus no use for the software. When is kde application development going to get to the point where there is so much, that we don't include everything by default as part of the kde desktop? My 2 cents.

I've only used K3b, but found it to have everything I need in a burning app.
Had a little problem setting it up (wouldn recognise my drive as a CD burner, just a reader), but it's been fine since.

k3b is part of the kde module kde-extragear_1.
Who knows it will be in kdemultimedia in the near future

I like cdbakeoven because it "just works". k3b does not like the way I already have my burner/reader configured and I am not bothered in teaching it how too.

Konsole, bash, cdrecord and mkisofs!
You dont want to start a poll without XCDROAST do you ?
I think you miss the most powerfull ones. XCDROAST and the command line tools are much more powerfull than any of the GUI tools.

Well as a CD and DVD burner, I must admit I am also an xcdroaster user, I occasionally use k3b when I am burning a DVD on xcdroaster and I don't want to wait to burn a CD.
