ok, so....

i suck at linux. sorry in advance. i just switched over from XP (yay), but i dont know how to do much of anything yet.

my main problem, is that i dont understand how to install programs. i download the RPM files, and double click on them, i just dont get what to do from there.

anyway, i'm running kopete 8.0, and would like to get the new version. how do i go about updating it. i know this is probably very basic, and annoying, but i would really appreciate any time you guys could spare helping me.

Welcome to linux, falcon. It can be a little bit of a steep learning curve, but once you are past it - there is no turning back, i promise :-).

Firstly, you have to let us know a little bit more about your system. Every distribution of linux is different and runs in a different way.

For example, mandrake, redhat and suse all have different ways of using rpm packages.

Meanwhile, if you want to update your kopete, you can either get a package from your distributor or compile from source.

For a beginner, you would only ever need to compile from source if you a package wasn't available.

Hope we can be of help, but first we need to know more. (Mainly distibution and release - eg I use suse 9.1

i am currently using Mandrake 10, although i also have SuSe 9.1

do you think i would be better off with SuSe? i dont really care which linux i'm using for now, the GUI will probably be the same anyway....

I think both distributions have some kind of software manager that runs the actual system packagemanger in the background.

On SuSE this is YaST, on Mandrake very likely called something with "drake" at the end :)

I guess they both offer the possibility to upgrade software as well.

I haven't used Mandrake in a while, but there was an app called rpmdrake too install apps.

In suse, you can download packages from the suse website (which i dont think you can do with mandrake).

In suse, you should set the source of installation to be one of these servers

hmmmmmmmm thanks guys.

i tried installing my suse, but it wouldnt freakin boot. arrrrrrrgh. i suck at this.

could it be my motherboard or something? i'm using a 4 year old gateway right now. thats right boys. athlon processor (900 MHz), 256 megs of SD ram, a GeForce 2. you know you love it..lol. only thing that isnt gateway-ish about it, is the 80 gig WD Caviar drive i tossed in it. anyway, could it be something about the gateway bios that only want to see a windows operating system on it? i dont think this is the case, but i have no idea why it wont boot.
