i'm desperate...
until yesterday, i could use kdm for logging in without any problems. i don't see why this is, but now, instead of starting kde (or any other environment), kdm just restarts the xserver and by doing so itself. it's irrelevant whether i try to login as normal user or root. starting kde from console via startx still works fine, though.
i didn't even touch any config-files, actually, that's what makes me wonder most. all i did was to install java2 (1.4.0 with webstart), mozilla 1.3 and openoffice 1.0.3.1, all from official binaries. oh yes, and i 'apt-got' all available r-packages (statistical analysis environment).
purging kdm and reinstalling it had no effect. but i noticed an "fold: command not found" error in some x-logfile, though fold is in path. anybody has a clue? any hints are welcome!
my system: debian (testing) with xfree86-4.3 and kde 3.1.1, a matrox g200 (mga).
