KDE Focus Fall Through Oddity

Anybody seen this one? Sometimes, I find that KDE allows key events to fall through from the application I'm working in down to the desktop.

For example, say I have a shell open and then right-click on the desktop to lock the screen. When I come back in again, the shell window still has the focus and I start typing in it. The keystrokes appear in the shell, BUT they are also picked up by the desktop icons. Thus, if I type a "t" in the shell, the Trash icon is also selected. Similarly, if I use the cursor keys to go over my command history, the desktop icons are selected in turn. And, of course, if I strike the enter key, whatever desktop icon is now highlighted starts up its app. That can be kind of annoying.

Even if I move from one window to another--say, from the shell window over to a word processor window--the desktop still sees my keystrokes. The only way I've found to stop it is to left-click on the desktop so as to unhighlight the desktop icon, and then click back on the application window I actually want to work in.

I'm using Libranet 2.8 and its default installed version of KDE (3.1.1). I've made no intentional changes to KDE.
