Starting kde
Right now i have two ways of starting kde:
as root with command `kdm'
as any user with commands `export XSESSION=kde-3.1.2;startx`
i tend to prefer the first, since i am lazy. Is one of them substantially better than the other? i would hate to be exposing security holes by running kdm as root, except i suppose its run setuid root eventually anyway.

Personally I would never log on to my systems as root, due to security risks and if I did needed root privileges I would just su – sudo on command line. Assuming sudo is configured.

kdm is usuall run as root.
But it is uncommon to start kdm using the commandline.
It should start in init5 as service.
