Desktop Sharing

Does anyone know how Desktop Sharing works, I have shared it on one System, but how do I access it from the other system? Many Thanks :?:

- You need a client program (e.g. vncviewer or KDE's krdc).
It will ask you for a hostname and display number (normally 0) of
the machine sharing its desktop (server machine).
E.g.: myserver:0
IP adresses instead of hostnames should work as well.

- Then the server machine will pop up a box saying that someone
is trying to connect and will ask for confirmation.

- The client must provide the password.

Note: There is a couple of config option in the server's desktop sharing
menu that change details of this process.

Hi, It worked as a dream on 1st system using krdc, but on the other system I keep getting Incorrect Password Access Denied. Has anyone got any idea?

cmbofh you've mentioned that There is a couple of config option in the server's desktop sharing menu that change details of this process.
Well I can't find them, could you tell me where they are and what they do?

It's the menu with the button "Create and manage invitaions".
I guess you've seen it when you created the invitation.
You can allow uninvited connections there.
The associated password won't expire and you can tell
it to not require a confirmation of the connection
on the server side.

I'm afraid that won't help you much against the "Incorrect password"
error message...

- The invitations can only be used once. Did you create a new one
for machine 2?
- Have you double-checked that the password you entered is correct
on machine 2?
- Is Caps-Lock off? ;-)

BTW: If you want to call directly the menu I meant try
kcmshell kcmkrfb
on the command line.

I have been very happy using it for a few days now, but there is one thing that I would like to change. You mentioned that the associated password "won't expire" and that I can tell it to not require a confirmation of the connection on the server side. Could you please let me know where to make those settings? I have been looking for a config file but I can't find one and there aren't any man pages for it either.

Well, I didn't try this mode but I have these config options in the GUI:
Internet & Network -> Desktop Sharing
-> Tab Access
Below the "Invitations" section there's the "Uninvited Connections" section
- Check the "allow univited connections" checkbox
- Uncheck the "Confirm uninvited connections before accepting" checkbox
- Enter a password into the password field
- You probably als want to check the "allow uninvited connections to control
the desktop" checkbox

Ok, back to this old Story, Yesterday I installed a Firewall on the Server, and then I realise that my KDE Desktop Sharing was not working anymore, well, well, well what a surprise, anyway i would like to know that the port are for the KDE Desktop Share , so that I can open the ports on the firewall.

Although I haven't run vnc through a firewall yet
I found this is in the VNC faq:
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/faq.html#q53

Port 5900 is the server's default but you can adjust it on the
tab network of the "Desktop Sharing" config.
