Importing .csv to KAddressBook

KDE 4.5.0 under Mandriva 2010.1
I have name and address data in an OpenOffice spreadsheet and I have saved it as a .csv file twice, using comma and tab as separators.
In each case, KAddressBook ignores empty fields on import, which makes a nonsense of the import. What can I do to respect the positional significance of the data?
