Panel won't span two screens

I have a twinhead arrangement. Under kde3 the kicker would span both screens, under kde4 it won't become bigger than one. While windows can span the screens the desktops are separate, for instance I can only get desktop icons to cover one screen (I can get icons on the 2nd screen but they are a repeat of the first screen). This is all very annoying.

How can I get the panel to span both screens and unite the desktop (so I can treat it as one large space _and_ still retain knowledge of the boundary so windows snap to the boundary and maximise to the boundary?

I have tried deleting the desktop activity on the second screen (kde just creates a new one), I have tried editing plasma-desktop-appletsrc to remove the offending second screen containment and enlarge the first one but kde just creates a new containment for the second screen. It is really annoying.

Cheers,

SA

btw I now have two cashews as well - the two screen things has confused ihatethecashew so I can't get rid of them!

This is a recognised KDE4 bug by design https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=167825 and currently impossible to fix. Back to kde 3 then since it is right annoying!
