Opaque taskbar/panel

I hope this is an appropriate place to post this. The kde-look forum seems largely inactive.

I set my panel/"taskbar" to autohide to free up desktop space. Because of this, it comes up over random backgrounds - especially status bars of other windows and that makes it very hard to read.

What can I do to make the whole thing (taskbar, panel, etc.) have an opaque background?

Currently, I am using the oxygen theme, kde 4.2.2, kubuntu jaunty. I like it, but could switch to another one if it fixes this feature for me.

TIA
Joe

If you want an opaque panel turn off compositing = the desktop effects of kwin. Alas this isn't configurable anymore.
