kwin 4.3 failure during initialisation

Hello. I've just updated KDE to 4.3 on Kubuntu 9.04 Jaunty by using the backports repository. I have no window manager, and ~/.xsession-errors shows "kwin: failure during initialization; aborting". The same thing happens if I run kwin again in a terminal on the desktop (which isn't very easy to use without a window manager!). kwin doesn't seem to have any command line options to give verbose output, so where do I go from here, please?
