Placing taskbar on the right (or left) side of desktop is unusable

I haven't tested 4.2 yet, but 4.1 stil has the ''feature'' to autosize all icons and open programs links when taskbar is put on the side of desktop and makes taskbar almost useless (ridicolous).
I am using taskbar on the right side of the desktop since 1280x1024 resolution and in past years monitor resolution has grown horizontaly but almost none verticaly and positioning taskbar on sides is very important to me.
Or have I missed something?
