MIDI Keyboard

I Have a slight problem and was hoping someone here could help me with it.
I have a keyboard that I love to Jam on and i have some programs that i love to jam with on my computer as well
(Beast and ZynAddSubFX Software Synthesizer.) i went out and got a midi to USB cable to hook my computer and keyboard
together, is there any program that will make my computer see the keyboard or am I just wasting my time?
