Newbie needy helpy with chinese

Hey ya'll,

First off - I am in KDE 3.5.8 - mepis 7.1

I downloaded and installed chinese a schmorgusbord of chinese language tools for my computer - including fonts and a bundle of other goodies I didn't really understand - hehe. Anyhoo, I can display chinese characters in all online applications- hell yeah! Unfortunately as still unable to input simplified chinese in pinyin. Anything I find out there on the web just adds to my confusion. Can someone give me some clues? Any guidance highly appreciated!
