KMail won't fetch e-mail.

Hello,
KMail has stopped retrieving e-mail. One minutes everything was fine, a few minutes later,
it stopped. It gives no error message and makes no effort to do anything when instructed
to check mail. No response of any kind.
I'm running KMail 1.9.10 in KDE 3.5.10, in Kubuntu 8.04, amd_64.
I've gone so far as to un-install KMail and erase all traces of it, and start from scratch. I've done
that twice. No joy.
Any ideas on how to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated.
