Performance problems in Kde4.1

Hi

I'm having performace issues with KDEmod4.1 in Arch. X is using about 20% of the CPU when idle. Also, there are often random flickers during rendering - it looks like bits of the screen have been cut out and put together just before it renders the window. I've tried with and without compositing, but if anything the performance is worse without it!

I've got an AMD duel core and a GeForce nvidia 9600GT with the latest beta drivers (177.63 I think). I did see other posts talking about the known nvidia/xrender bugs but I don't think its that. I could well be my nvidia settings or xorg.conf, but I'm not sure how to find out. Here is my xorg.conf:
