KDE 4 and Multiple Desktops

I have Kubuntu 8.041 loaded and KDE 3.5 and 4 . I have a second monitor connected to my laptop with its own desktop. I am not using extended desktop or mirroring. In KDE3, the multiple desktops work like a charm, but when I log into KDE 4, they do not work. It is almost as though the second desktop is superimposed over my main desktop.

I would appreciate any help as this will cause me to not switch to KDE 4.
