KDE3 was working (debian etch) now I can only boot into Xterminal...

I don't know how I managed to break my working system... but now I boot into a screen with an X cursor (the mouse works) and a terminal window in the upper left (keyboard does not work). The terminal is logged into the user account I had setup (and working) for autologin. I can also boot Single User > Maint mode and get a command line. From there I've looked at some logs and reconfigured xorg. I'm not sure what I should be looking for re troubleshooting. The pc is an old sony laptop with Pentium M and 512mb ram. I had installed some software (via kpackage) before the problem first occurred a few days ago. Since then I have not gotten past the xterminal or maint/mode command line. Any suggestions appreciated.
