blank lines in HTML e-mail (KDE 4.1)

I'm having trouble getting blank lines to appear in my Kmail messages. These seem to be suppressed with

in the HTML so rather than
line 1

line 3

line 5

I get:
line1
line3
line5

Is it just me? Can anyone suggest how I can get my blank lines to appear?
