compile & install kde 4.1 on kubuntu 7.10

Hi all!
I have kubuntu 7.10 with kde 3.5 and would like to try out kde 4.1. Since there are no binaries for that platform, I will need to compile & install kde myself. I'm not a noob with this, but the documentation for doing this simply does not exist.
The instructions at techbase (http://techbase.kde.org/Getting_Started/Build/KDE4) are geared towards developers who want to test seperate apps while developing. (Modifications to .bashrc are needed, they suggest a seperate dev user is created, connections are made with ssh -X, ... )

I would like to compile and install kde 4.1 as a regular user, so that I can choose 3.5 or 4.1 at boot.
Please note that I realize there are binary packages for (k)ubuntu 8.04, but for some very specific reasons I am not willing to install it. (I had difficulties when I tried to install it on another partition, and do not feel comfortable doing an upgrade over my existing 7.10.) I would like to keep the complete setup I have right now.
Does anybody know where I can find a guide for non-developers to compile and install kde 4.1, or could somebody provide the necessairy steps?
Any help will be greatly appreciated. :)
