Blank Checkboxes?

I'm using KDE 3.5 on Ubuntu 8.04.1 (the standard Kubuntu distro), and whenever I click a checkbox to check it, it stays blank with a dotted line around it until I click somewhere else to un-highlight the box. The box is actally checked, but it seems the highlight is obscuring the check. I've asked on other forums and googled the heck out of it, but with no results.

Any ideas?
