I am sorry I have not been able to locate where I found the info that states NO smtp authentication required. It was at Gmail's Website. As I have beenputting this info together for you I have searched off and on. If you send me email directly regarding this, I would be happy to forward the SMTP info when I can locate again. I think I rember book marking it, but I have not imported my previous book marks back into this new install of Kubuntu.
Hope this help you. I am not an expert Linux user. Have only been using Kubuntu for a few days installed on one of my older machines. So far I like it and it installed without any problems for me.

Here are the steps I undertook:
- in "identity" I put my name@gmail
- in accounts - send
name: gmail
server: smtp.gmail.com
port: 465 (this was advized by a friend in order to get gmail right in kmail)
server authentifcation marked
username:
name@gmail.com
password..... save smtp password yes - clicked ok
I put safety on SSL and authentif.mode on PLAIN
- in accounts - receive
accountname: POP-account
username:
name@gmail.com
server: pop.gmail.com
port: 995 (same remark as with send port)
save pop password
use SSL
flat text
The problem is that mail stays in the Post Out instead of getting to send it.
For receiving the problem is that I get mails in up to about July, and no more; always the error message SYS/TEMP reappears, and a message that contact with the server gmail was cut off.
