New applications do not appear in the menu

Hello, I am using arch linux and kde 4.1 and have realized that all new applications that I install do not appear in the kmenu in classic style or the kickoff style. I can still launch apps using krunner but i have to type in the entire command since it does not recogize it. I have tried restoring the menu to default using the kmenu editor but that did not help as does adding or removing items from the kmenu. I can change the menu but when I try to save, the changes do not appear in the menu. Is anyone else getting this? Please I would appreciate any reply.
