KDE4 comments,especially regarding the Interface

I have just tried the version of KDE4 that can be installed through Kubuntu 8.04 (It says it's 3.3, but that seems a bit odd). Anyway, I have the following to say about it, for anyone who is interested:

I like the new 'Plasma' applets, especially the way that you can put them on the desktop - I have a nice big clock in the middle of my screen, a bit like (but much better than ;) ) Windows Vista's little clock thing. I think this sort of thing is a necessary step to keep Windows converts comfortable with the GUI while they ease themselves into Linux.

What I don't like is the way that the desktop is now no longer like a regular folder. This is likely to be a far bigger stumbling block for 'newbies' than the lack of the nice Vista clock. I like (sometimes) to save stuff to my desktop and work with it there, or to copy and paste things, and I'm pretty sure that I'm not alone in this - many browsers default to save to the Desktop.

I like the thought that has gone into Dolphin, in producing a dedicated file manager, but as far as I can see, it isn't much different from Konqueror, but is lacking some of the useful features that Konqueror had. I would prefer to use Konqueror to manage my files, is there an option somewhere in KDE4 to do this? (I know there was in KDE3 when Dolphin came out, but I haven't quite found my way around KDE4 yet enough to do this.)

I had a lot of 'Input Actions' programmed in my KDE3 profile, but these don't seem to have transferred across, and neither can I find the KDE4 control panel.

In conclusion - this is a very nice, slick piece of work, but it has a long way to go before I will consider it a serious replacement for KDE3. This is not, however, a bad reflection on the developers - it certainly has potential - KDE3 is probably the best desktop environment I have ever worked with, and I've worked with quite a few, keep up the good work.

The wisest thing that Microsoft did when releasing their fancy new look interface for XP was to have an easily accessible option that made everything look like 'Classic' windows. With these thoughts considered, KDE4 will be the undisputed champion of the Linux desktop, and I look forward to using it in the future, but for now, I will continue to use KDE3.

Since I posted this thread ...

I have discovered how to change the default back to Konqueror (systemsettings > advanced > file associations > inode > directory, for anyone who is interested) so now I am happy about that.

I have started to become used to the idea of not having a file manager desktop, though it still lacks a certain something, if I think what it is, I will be sure to post.

I still haven't got all my input actions to work, but some of them do, and I'm working on the rest.

It's looking good, and I look forward to the next release.

Well, after trying at KDE4 after being a GNOME user for quite some time, I must say I am impressed in the way the project is moving. There are, of course, some things which have not been reimplemented, or designed out, that I do not like. For example, the autohide panel option is missing at the moment, and I find it really annoying to have the panel always visible. Until that changes, I probably will still use GNOME a good deal on my Gentoo box.

Another change I did not enjoy is the desktop no longer being a folder, as the opening poster said. I liked it better as a folder, though perhaps it will grow on me, too.

I have also had problems with memory usage. I am unsure of how much RAM KDE should consume, but it is a good bit more than GNOME. GNOME consumes around 300 to 350 MB, but KDE4 has used upwards of 600MB. Both of these are with only the basics open. That is, just logged in + Firefox. I wonder if there are still memory leaks that are being plugged. I assume there are.

At the moment, the System Manager shows 16 kio_http processes running, each consuming 4 MB of RAM. This is with Firefox open, if it is related. With Konqueror open, the number ballooned to 25, same RAM each. Hope it gets fixed.

Overall though, I am impressed. I'm even considering switching from GNOME to KDE.

In order to see folders on the desktop you can add a folder widget which should default to home i believe. Kde 4.2 will include a folder widget to as a desktop background to bring back the old functionality. To be honest, though i'm a desktop worker, I havent missed it very much.

That's good news, though it doesn't seem to be in my list of widgets yet.

I'm looking forward to that... and my fuzzy clock.
