KDE4 on the command line

As a newbie to KDE4 I'd
like to kick off a thread that collects how one can make changes to
KDE4's appearance and behaviour on the command line - ranging from
kdm-kde4 and its appearance to changing the desktop itself.

For KDE3, documentation was hard to come by and it took me absolute ages to gather it all...

So, if any of you have a working KDE4 install and have found one config file or another, then please share your experiences.
