Help getting KDE 3.5 to work without /usr/local available

Hi,

I tried installing a new version of my distro that includes KDE 3.5 at work, but I was seeing disappearing icons and freezing. After checking different things, I think the problem is that in my company's environment, /usr/local is replaced by an NFS mount (yes, it's stupid to have a remote /usr/local. It's not under my control). The version of KDE I was running previously (it was v3, but I don't know what the minor release number was, sorry) worked fine.

Any advice about what to do?

Old (working) distro: OpenSUSE 10.3
New (non-KDE-working) distro: OpenSUSE 11.0

Thanks,
Nathan
