icon overlay like files with .gz extension

Hi all,
When we create a new openoffice document and change its extension .doc.gz openoffice icon shows normal and an extra gzip icon as overlay.How can i do for our new file type ??? How can i we set our overlay icon for our defined file extension.???On windows we can do this with shell extension. I don't know how can i do this on linux??
