kwifimanager dosent connect to networks it detects!

I got KDE 4 a few days ago and i am running ubuntu 7.10 on a HP 6515b laptop. In gnome the network manager uses ndiswrapper and i can connect to networks. I installed kwifimanager and searched for networks, it detects my wifi network but when i click switch to network nothing happens and it says no signal or ad hoc mode. When i am connected on gnome and logout and boot into kde the kwifimanager displays that it is connected to the wifi network. I want to know how to connect to the wifi without having to boot into gnome first. Thanks for help!
