need help-suse 10.1-kde 3.5.1

hello i hope this is the place to post,i have installed suse 10.1 running kde 3.5.1
i am used to windows but my xp crashed on me,i am a complete novice at linux and do not know how to download anything and where to,is there some way of running that i would be able to understand what i am doing like windows?i see that kde has a desktop system bu dont know how to start it,also i cannot setup my mail account,i downloaded thunderbird but dont know how to open it,i have to use my laptop to contact you,any help would be great.
