Changing resolution in KDE 4, Apply always gray

I'm a returner to Linux from the days of yore, and I am having an issue. I'm running KDE 4 with Kubuntu and in the System Settings when I go to Display everything I change in there has no effect and the Apply button is always grayed out no matter how much I change. I was running KDE 3.5.? when I installed and still have it installed, so I don't know if that's messing anything up, but if anyone can tell me how to get control there it'd be great. Or if someone could tell me a CLI way to change resolutions on the fly, I'd be happy with that too. Thanks.
