how to set window default size?

I installed debian testing on a dell xps m1330, along with 915resolution, kdm and kde. Everytime I open a new application, window default size is too small (it doesn't fit the whole screen). How can I define the default size windows? It seems like if kdm/kde thinks are working in a smaller screen size machine, since the login screen doesntn appear centered (it's a little bit to the left).
