Dear all,
I hope you can point me to a solution to my display problem:
I am using openSUSE 10.3 64 bit with KDE 4.0 and KDE 3.5.8. The fglrx driver installation is a known tricky spot, but I know for sure that the ATI proprietary driver is up and running in KDE 3 (checking there is no VESA blabla vendor string, using glxgears, etc.). Hence, KDE3 runs in an accelerated mode (transparent window decor (Crystal) and OpenGL screen saver). In order to enable desktop effects (unsure of proper translation) in KDE 4, KDE 4 tells me I need the Composite and Damage Extensions to X, of which I enable the former:
Section "Extensions"
# Option "DAMAGE" "true"
# Option "RENDER" "true"
Option "Composite" "true"
EndSection
This allows me to enable the desktop effects. However, they do not work using OpenGL, but only with XRender. No matter which of the two I activate, however, the display is spoiled: Obviously, parts of the screen are not redrawn when they should be. E.g., I need to move the mouse over context menus to make the options offered visible, and symbols like the klipper symbol in the KickOff task bar have funny colors around them.
The odd thing is that sometimes, everything seems to be fine, and then, it starts making trouble again.
Thanks for reading - I hope some of you can give me hints at how to pursue a solution: I'm much looking forward to reaching the point when I can use KDE 4 as my regular production desktop.
Cheers
