Can't get KDE to start from KDM login

Can't get KDE to start from KDM login

Just recently on one of my machines KDE has stopped working and will not let me login from the KDM login screen. It works just fine if I login using the console and then do a startx, but when I try to login from the KDM screen I first get a blank screen and then the screen blinks and takes me back to the main KDM login screen.

I have reviewed the KDM.log file and the only error that I can find says that it was unable to load mach64. I did a google on this and didn't really find much information. The one piece I did find said to try commenting out the Load dmi and glx ( I think the last one might be wrong) modules in the xorg.conf file. I tried this and I still have the same issues.

I haven't done anything new to the machine. It is running debian etc 4.0 with 2.6.18-5 kernel and KDE 3.5.5.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start with this issue?

I had the same issue. I changed from using gdm to kdm. Once I did this, and logged in, KDE would not start, it just gave me a command shell.

The way I fixed my problem was to delete all of my kdmrc files (locate kdmrc). Once I did this, it seems that kdm recreated a default kdmrc file, which loaded KDE. I then used the Control Centre - Login Manager - to reconfigure my own login settings.
