Autodetecting utf16?

Can KDE apps (like Kate and Kword) detect UTF16 text files automatically? I often transfer small text files from PDA/smartphones and they are all UTF16. When loading these files, Kate complains that the files are "corrupted" and I have to manually set the encoding to UTF16. Kword also cannot recognize UTF16 automatically, and I have to manually select the encoding from further down the list.
